Arrochar

The town of Arrochar sits at the head of Loch Long and lends its name to the mountain range that it lies below, the Arrochar Alps, the most popular of which is Ben Arthur or more commonly known as the Cobbler. Loch Long is an arm of the Clyde  and leads down to the Island of Bute. Arrochar and Loch Long were the home of a submarine torpedo range up to the 1990's but now is really much more famous for its outdoor pursuits and in particular, hill walking and mountaineering.

There are magnificent walks from Arrochar, most involve some relatively high level paths. A new path which has recently opened to help walkers gain access to the Arrochar Alps Plateau, a high level coll or beallach between Ben Arthur (the Cobbler), Ben Narnain and Ben Ime. This path was put in place to stop the continuing erosion of the original path and is much less steep and provides a pleasant walk for those who prefer less steep pursuits. The views are magnificent. Click on Our Mountains page for information about the mountain walks in this area.

Loch Long provides good sea fishing from either the shore or from a boat. For fishing information just visit our Lochs and Fishing pages. The nearest village to Arrochar is Tarbet (not in Argyll and not to be confused with Tarbert, Loch Fyne) on the shores of Loch Lomond. Arrochar and Tarbet share a railway station which is a convenient method of transport to the vicinity. This stop is on the main Glasgow - Oban and Glasgow - Fort William, lines. There is also a bus service which stops at Arrochar from Glasgow.

Loch Long has also become quite popular with divers. It is of course easily accessible from the Glasgow area and can be considered a place for "day trip" divers.

Arrochar has many accommodation providers (click on the appropriate links on the left menu bar) and also a few restaurants and pubs. There is also a filling station.
