The town
of Campbeltown at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre, is a long way
from anywhere. However the views and the beaches along the
Tarbert - Campbeltown road are excellent and Machrihanish beach
near the town is quiet and excellent for walking along to relax.

The
general area includes Davaar Island, Carradale, Glenbarr,
Machrihanish, Southend and Saddell.
The
harbour of Campbeltown is guarded at its entrance by Davaar
which becomes an island at high tide. The island is famous
for its cave painting of Christ which was painted by
Archibald Mackinnon in 1887.
The
causeway can be dangerous and in adverse weather conditions
with a rising tide has recently claimed the life of a local
man. Care should be taken and if caught on the wrong side,
do not take any risks by crossing. |

The town
itself is overlooked by a hill, Ben Ghuilean where on a choice
of walking routes, a great view of the town and its sea
approaches can be appreciated. Due to its geographical position,
Campbeltown is still a popular fishing port despite the decline
of the Scottish fishing industry. There was recently a ferry
which ran from here to Ireland, unfortunately that is no longer
the case.
The
village of Carradale is about 15 or 16 miles up the east side of
Kintyre north of Campbeltown with a well sheltered fishing
harbour. Signs in the area welcome visitors and proclaim the
friendliness of all. This is a pleasant drive with many places
to stop and admire the views or enjoy a picnic. This area is
particularly good for walks and cycle tracks and the Kintyre Way
goes through the village.
Another
pleasant trip is down to Southend where there are many good
views and places to stop. You can also see Columba's footprints
in the stone and also the famous Keil caves. The beaches here
are sandy and often with good surf. At this point you are only
12 miles from Ireland.
