The town
of Dunoon benefited from the proximity of the great city of
Glasgow in the 1800s when it was popular to take a trip "doon
the water" in numerous ferries and paddle steamers. Visitors
then explored the beautiful surrounding countryside of the Cowal
peninsular. Dunoon is a large town with many beautiful buildings
and facilities that you would expect from a successful town. It
is therefore a good base to stay to then explore the surrounding
area.

The area
is particularly well known for the Cowal Games, probably the
biggest highland games gathering in the world today. It is
always held on the last Friday and Saturday every August. If you
have never been to a full blown Highland Games then this is a
must see event for you.
All around
this peninsula are great walks both short and long with many
paths that are good for cyclists too. Because of this there are
more and more visitors arriving with the intention of
experiencing an outdoor holiday, which may also include
kayaking, fishing, horse riding and of course golf. |

Argyll
forest has many picnic spots and view points throughout this
area. There are no charges for parking or using the picnic
tables. As with all or Argyll and most of the west of Scotland,
there are many lochs and mountains in the area. Cowal is no
exception. Loch Eck is stunning loch which cuts its way through
the Cowal Peninsula. Even although this is a spur of the Clyde
estuary which instantly makes people think of shipbuilding and
high population, you could not be further away from that image
here. Loch Eck is a wild looking place where any visitor will be
in awe of the scenery and the peaceful surroundings.
Getting to
Dunoon from the main population centres of Scotland is easiest
by Ferry from Gourock with a ferry about every 15 minutes. This
is a car and passenger ferry run by
Western Ferries. Alternatively drive along Loch Lomond side
and then head down the Inveraray road. Watch for the Dunoon
signpost on that road. |
