The town of Sandbank is about two and a half miles from Dunoon and was the focus for the shore base activities of the US submarine base base which was stationed in Holy Loch. The base was decommissioned in 1992 and there is now a very successful marina with facilities for up to 200 yachts. The marina is now the proposed gateway to the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National park.

The Holy Loch is a small loch leading off from the Clyde Estuary. The presence here of the US Submarine base previously added a lot to the economy of the area, thankfully now the growth in tourism is helping the economy along nicely.
