Built by
Sir Duncan Campbell, 7th Laird of Glenorchy in the early 17th
century, Barcaldine Castle locally known as the black castle is
a defensive tower house. Barcaldine castle is nowhere near
Barcaldine village but in fact just outside Benderloch village a
number of miles to the south of Barcaldine.
|
Barcaldine
castle is a family home however it is open to the public
every easter and then from May to September. An interesting
fact is that the artist F C B Cadell (pronounced "cad-ill"
not "ca-dell", although his sister preferred the second
pronunciation) lived here for a while. Paintings
from this famous Scottish colourist are now sought after and
change hands for six figure amounts. |
