Built on Fraoch Eilean (Heather Island) off Jura’s Southwest coast, Claig castle was once a massive sea fortress and stronghold of the Clan MacDonald and enabled the MacDonald, Lord of the Isles to dominate seagoing movements, North and South, through the Hebridean Island for 4 Centuries. The castle was taken from the MacDonalds by Clan Campbell of Argyll in the 1600s.
The castle itself of course is now a ruin but there is a substantial part of the tower house which still stands proud overlooking the approaches to the narrows between the islands of Islay and Jura.
